    Phish Rumor Thread

@Phish_Forum is at the All-Good Festival this weekend, and tweeted that CK5 confirmed an MSG run for this NYE. I don't know this guy, but I started following him on Twitter over this past summer tour. He provided great commentary during some shows. Not a hot rumor. Completely expected, but good news nonetheless.

Since I started playing the drums again a few weeks ago, I decided to also revisit another passion of mine that I haven't tried in several years: writing. I've been looking for a writing project for a number of years and like a poor writer, never indulged the quick ideas that popped into my brain, and gave up too quickly on the ones that didn't pan out right away. I've always had the idea of writing about Phish and my experience since getting into their music and live shows. But every time I've started, I got frustrated because I couldn't find the right angle to approach such a wide-ranging topic and experience. Several false starts ensued. Once Phish announced their MSG New Year's run for 2016-17, I did some quick math and calculated that 12/29/16 would be my 100th show--on the 19th anniversary of my first at the same venue. All of a sudden, a light bulb flashed over my head and I thought of a construct for my writing project. 100 is a nice round number (even though hundreds of fans have seen dozens more shows than that), and I see it as something of a milestone. I decided to start a blog (maybe temporarily) and write a post about each one of those 100 shows. Each one is divided into two sections: Context and The Show. The Context acts as an extended introduction and a window into my thoughts surrounding the show and what was going on in my life at the time. The Show portion is more of a straightforward show review. If you like my posts on this board when I give bullet-point casual show reviews, this blog is in line with that...just for shows that happened 10-20 years ago. Check it out if you have time to waste or are personally interested in one man's trash. Feel free to comment about anything. Thanks! Phish100

    Summer Tour 2016

Probably might as well start a thread for general tour discussion. For some weird reason I have a feeling they'll play landlady a handful of times this tour. I also think that they'll do Magilla. I don't know why, but I do. Too bad they'll never do Leprechaun again
  6. Okay I was just reflecting on something from last weekend and thought it might be worth sharing. Long story short I was recording bands at a birthday party of a certain person at a certain music magazine last weekend in Brooklyn. 5 years ago he had hired The Slip to play and this year was more of a hodge podge in two different bands playing about an hour each. Some of the guys I knew. Some I didn't. One person I didn't know was the lead guitarist in the second band. He immediately impressed me with his playing though. After the set I was breaking down gear right next to his rig and chatted him up about guitar. Oh year I should note that he was teasing Trey riffs all night and not only did the band do a small Harpua narration bit but also a forced and unplanned Tweezer reprise to cap of the night. It's worth noting that all of it was relatively unplanned. In fact Marc Friedman bailed out on the gig the day before because he had no idea who he was to be playing with and what they were to play. The first set was an hour of improv from guys who literally met an hour early when setting up. The second set was a bunch of rock covers. Anyway, back to this guitarist. We are talking guitars and Trey for a bit. I finally ask him what his main gig is and low an behold he has been the guitarist in the Saturday Night Live band for the last 9 years! I thought some people might appreciate that he is a big Trey nerd.

  8. Like a lot of previous posters in this series of threads, I thought entirely too much about which show to pick. I tried to take a look at any sort of pattern or commonalities at the shows that have already been picked and wanted to steer the discussion into a new direction. Most of the picks have been from the mid-1990s to 2000, probably the peak of the band's career. My initial thought was to pick another 1994 show, but it was legitimately difficult to find one that most people haven't already heard (I'm guessing). In my car, I've been listening to a lot of early Phish; 1990-1991. I don't have a long commute, so I like setlists with short, peppy, energetic songs. But at the same time, a lot of songs from that era are played with a really slow tempo, since the band is still feeling most of them out. Also, many shows from 1990-1991 don't have a great setlist flow, bc the band is basically throwing everything to the wall to see what sticks. In my search for this show, I found another one that opens with Whipping Post, goes to Sweet Adeline, and followed up with TMWSIY->Avenu Malkenu->TMWSIY . I checked out some 1992 shows, and they sound almost like a completely different band than they did in 1991 or 1993. In 1992, they were in control of most of their songs, and were perfecting the 2-set show. At the same time, they sounded like a perfect cross between a band with serious chops, and a TMBG-type group of goobers. I used to have the tape of this show in my first car (1990 Volvo GLE), so this is a sentimental choice. At the same time, I only had the tape of the first set, so the second set is new to me. Enjoy! Edit for @cappy : Link to the show
  9. Ok folks.. My computer access time is limited to my working hours, so I'm opting to post early instead of late. I was sorely tempted to poach a selection from madcap's shortlist, (which is a kickass shorlist btw), but this might be even better. I've listened to the highlight reel years ago but have never really discussed it. So without further ado, I give you: How can anyone get tired of shows from this year? Here is yet another a handpicked gem from Europe 98, which could be the most underrated phish tour of all time. I've picked night 2 from this three night run in Freetown Christinia, Copenhagen, and if you look at all three set lists, you'll see why it was a tough choice. Night 2 wins out for setlist variety concerns; ie, we've done a Ghost and a YEM but no Tweezer yet. However the Ghost and YEM from night 3 are MUST HEARS. For stat geeks, and because I have an inside joke to live up to, this show features the first of two consecutive unreprised Tweezers. Wowie zowie!!! The auds sound incredible, almost like soundboards. I've heard very little discussion on this run, so let's dig in! Filler recommendations are in spoiler tags so as not to overwhelm anyone, because this run looks so flipping good we might not all be able to handle it. filler:

    LP Download Code Exchange

With Summer Tour underway, I figure we should have one of these threads. I don't have any codes to offer yet, but would anyone be willing to give up a code to last night's Atlantic City show (6/16/12)? I'm eager to hear the Light/Manteca/C+P. If so, PM me! I'll have some Jones Beach codes to offer later this summer. Thanks, and happy swapping!
  12. So apparently someone was so desperate to get Halloween tickets they offered up some uncirculated Big Cypress footage from the midnight set. It's the line edit that feeds the big screens. From what I've gathered this set was on 4 VHS tapes and this person managed to get 3 of 4 of them from a source that then denied the final tape. I'm not even sure when this occurred. These three VHS tapes are 1st generation copies. PT ripped the guy a new one for trying to profit and not share the recordings. So to save face he had to find someone local to make VHS to DVD (barf) transfers. He insisted on doing a vine snail mail trading system on PT. Someone ended up ripping them to MKV files and leaked them online yesterday. Unfortunately while the videos are great quality overall the methods involved were not ideal. DVD-R is MPEG-2 format which is from the 90's. It can easily introduce unwanted artifacts like interlacing and aliasing. I woke up with the 3 mkv files this morning and confirmed that these are both present in the videos. Which is a shame. In fact it's a double shame that whoever ripped the DVD's didn't even know to deinterlace while ripping. Now the MKV files have interlacing while the file thinks it's progressive scan. So frustrating that these were not handled a little better. They should have been upscaled to 1080p and treated properly. Oh well.
