Just finished this. Excellent, quick read that made me alternate nodding vigorously in agreement and weeping in sorrow when I think about how we won't be able to do any of the ideas suggested.

Anyone read this or anything by Huston? I just read that Alan Ball is planning a series for HBO based on this book. I was thinking about picking it up because I am a huge Ball fan, but I don't know anyone who has read it or him.

What do you think? I'm reading it as well. Slow progress because I'm reading other stuff too, but I'm really enjoying it. Learning a lot.

Also working on this one now. Had it on the shelf, and decided to pick it up because I'm heading to San Francisco in Sept. and might have to check this place out.

I gobbled up Cat's Cradle in two nights. I really enjoyed it, but it didn't resonate with me as well as Sirens of Titan and Slaughterhouse Five. Still a fantastic read. I've tackled it, Sirens, Slaughterhouse, and Breakfast of champions. Any recommendations for my next Vonnegut?

This one is on deck for tonight:

I've been cranking through books this week:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51uIoMdHcDL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

all VERY good and informative. I had nightmares after finishing the Translator, although it was far lighter than anything else I've read on Darfur. very quick read, and you feel like you're best friends w/ the author from his writing style.

I recently read Galapagos, which was pretty darn good.

Also, Welcome to the Monkey House is a collection of short stories and I really loved it as well.

Slapstick is kind of odd, but pretty entertaining as well.

Cool, will do! Thanks for the recommendation. Those books you posted look really interesting too, especially that Darfur one.

This thread is so awesome for book ideas. I just need to make more time to read them!

if you're interested in Darfur, this book is just amazing. Heartwrenching at times, but ignoring these realities is far worse than some depression you feel after reading this.

i'm ridiculously excited for the 3rd/final book in this series to come out this week. these books have been like reading crack for me. can't stop.

I just started the third one this weekend - so far it's great. I really like that this one picked up right where #2 left off. These books are so different than anything Ive read in the thriller/murder/espionage/violence against women genre. If that even is a genre. Maybe it's b/c lots of it is in Swedish. :) In any case, I love reading them.

I just finished The Host. Yes, yes it's by the same author as the Twilight Saga so go ahead and make fun of it, but it was an awesome story. Nothing ground breaking in terms of literary genius but the story itself is great - it's a love story with an invasion of the body snatchers sub-plot. Good stuff.

Just finished The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown. Meh. Kinda thrilling in the middle but ending was very rough.

Moved onto something local. This is supposed to be the de facto book covering life in my town around the start of the American Revolution.

I loved Slapstick, but haven't made it to Monkey House yet. I almost don't want to read it because then I won't have any more Vonnegut to look forward to...

Have about 50 pgs left in this:

http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n65/n328641.jpg

Anyone know how long after the hardcover release it usually takes before the paperback is released? (Book 4 is already out, but I don't want a hardcover.)

I'm sure it varies but you're usually looking at about 6 months to a year or so.

Can't put this down. It is an exploration into where humans fit into the Earth as a planet and ecosystem and what will be left of our civilization when we're gone. It covers a lot of topics in the science and ecology realm, and is pretty fricking thought provoking. Evolution, human origins, prehistoric creatures, etc. I would highly recommend it to anyone into this kind of stuff.

Ha. I read that a couple weeks ago, and I had the exact same feelings. At least it made me feel validated for all the shit I bitch about everyday at my job.

Right now I'm reading Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate. Arr! I spent some time recently near Beaufort, NC, which made me hungry for some pirate info.

I'm also reading a book called Still Waters, White Waters which is a series of first hand accounts of canoe trips through various parts of North America. I stole it from the senior center where my grandmother lives. It's from the early 70's I believe, and it smells great, contains great photography, and gives me a nostalgic feeling.
