Yeah, that will totally work. I use the dual TS9's sort of like that. I set one to be very clean, more of just a slight OD and volume boost. The other one is where the dirty OD comes in. Mix them together, you have uber OD, but alone, they give you a nice variety of sound.

Thanks man, I appreciate the input and i will probably use all five loops in the bypass like we talked about. I will get to do some pedal dancin'!

Zander, you will be happy to know that i have totally gone against my past thoughts about minimizing my setup. I have officially contradicted myself by adding a bunch of pedals. I had a few pedals sitting in the basement and I decided that I mine as well not waste them. So now I have this big old mess of pedals.

Peterson Strobostomp
MXR Phase
Dunlop Wah with true bypass
E.H. Q-Tron
Boss Compressor
TS-9
BBE Distortion
E.H. Trem
E.H. Chorus
Line 6 Delay Echo Park
Boss Looper RC 20
BBE Sonic Stomp

Zander...you broke me! What am I supposed to do? Trade a bunch in? I hate getting nothing for them so I mine as well use them.

I am slowly assembling my rig right now and working out all the kinks. All I have left to do is mod my TS-9s, which I have kits for and get in my custom switching unit. If you have not seen loop masters bypass switches, check em out here. They are totally sweet. I still have to build all the cables but I have all the channels set up on the line 6...

My main amp is a 64 Fender Deluxe... I tried all 31 other modelled amps and this one matched what I wanted most closely, go figure.

The next amp is a Budda Twinmaster. Number 3 is the 63 Fender Vibroverb, a la SRV. The next is my second fav and matched the Deluxe the closest, a 96 Matchless Chieftan. My last amp is a 63 Vox AT-30.

Then I have a mish-mash of other amps for different sounds in my remainining channels... Supro, Soldano, Mesa Trip Rectifier, Roland, ect...

I will post a pic when I am finished.

Zander, about putting the Rang in one of my bypass loops. I tested it and then decided to put the Rang in my effects loop. I use some of my amp effect in my line 6... like tremolo. If the Rang is pre amplifier and I lay down a loop, I cannot use the trem without it effecting the recorded loop. In the fx loop, the rang can be recorded with or without any effects (including amp) and then played. Then I can change any effects and not effect the original recorded loop. This was very appearent when I used the rang to practice my lead playing and then tried to use amp effects. If you use no amp effects, it shouldn't matter.

This is setup 1:

Ibanez MC500>
Huckleberry Tonefactor>
535Q Wah>
Fulltone Fulldrive II>
MXR 10 EQ>
EB Volume>
Boss TU2 Tuner
Mesa Studio 22

Effects Loop
EH Worm>
Boss BF2 Flanger>
Digitech Digidelay>
Boss RC2 Looper>
Effects Loop

Setup 2

Ibanez MC500>
Digitech SynthWah
Huckleberry Tonefactor>
535Q Wah>
Fulltone Fulldrive II>
MXR 10 EQ>
Barber Tonepress>
EB Volume>
Boss TU2 Tuner
Digitech Digidelay>
Mesa Studio 22

Different setups for different bands. I'm looking at powered pedalboards, and I'll probably get that Mosfet Fulldrive.

Shit, run with it. If you can get sounds you really like out of everything there, kick it. If not, maybe use a pedal or two to trade toward something you want. You're on the right track though, no doubt. I've never been a big fan of the Boss Compressor, or any stompbox Trem, and I've never really dug chorus as an effect, but that's just me.

If you dig it, roll with it.

Couple things to consider now are power and cables. What kind of cables are you using, and how are you powering the pedals? You'll want clean, even power, so that you don't get any noisy pics or humbars (anyone, anyone?)...

Also, the right cables will help you minimize tone loss, which is one of your main goals.

Totally. Depending on what you want to do and how you want to do it (not to mention what you're working with), the effects loop is the way to go.

Thanks for the info Zander. I am currently using one of those monster power strips and a few wall warts, but I think I need to invest in something better. Any ideas?

I also need to improve the cables I am using from pedal to pedal. I currently use basic patch cables. What do you suggest? I have heard good and bad about George L's and they are expensive, so I don't want to take a chance.

As for chorus and trem.....I think in combination with other effects you can get really spacey sounds. I like to use them in conjunction with overdrive and phase. The Boss Compressor, it does the job. I could probably use something better, but like all of us I need to save up for it.

Well, the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power seems to be the best, for power. The PP2 can handle the big Line 6 boxes, but if you don't have that, the PP1 should be fine, not to mention cheaper.

George L cables are fine as long as it's a stationary board that. Meaning, as long as the cables aren't being tugged on and pulled around by moving pedals, they shouldn't short out. I just re-did my board with George L's, and while it REALLY helps to have a cable tester around, they're pretty easy to get right.

George L's are about the cheapest way to go for "good" cables. You can get custom ones, with nuetrik connectors and that kind of thing, but that gets really pricey. Regular cables aren't "bad", per se, but they're not excellent, either.

If the Boss compressor works for you, rock it. But you can find the AnalogMan Comprossor for $150 at The Gear Page right now...

Just bought a Boss AC-3 Acoustic Simulator and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about where to put it in the chain?

How about a Godlyke pwoer adapter? I think I paid $25 for the adapter and all the connectors and i use 2 to power all my pedals. Some have complained that it can be noisy, but I haven't noticed!

For options other than George L's, I would check with Lavaman at Lavacables. He's based out of NC and his stuf is supposed to be top notch.

I would put the chorus, delay, and looper in the efx loop. I have my whammy, delay, and 'rang in a loop.

How do you like the micro vibe? I've been looking into them, pretty cheap and i've heard good things.

hey footwear. i like the micro vibe. easy to use, sounds good. sounded better to me than other's that i tryed...but not alot of options. sweet sounds makes a vibe that looks to be a step up. also as of late the footswitch has been acting up on this pedal...only 6 months old. thanks for your input on my post.

OK folks, just bought a pedal board and am gearing up to wire things up within the next few weeks. I know I've got some experimenting to do with effect order and such, but I'm looking for some input from you as to how I should order things up. I've actually got a few effects that I've yet to plug in (work has been nuts), so I'm not sure how everything is going to work. Here's what I'm working with, in the approximate order in which I'll prob wind up arranging things (that's just the way I think):

Doobtone Micro-Buffer
Dunlop 535Q Wah
Ernie Ball Jr. Volume Pedal (with Korg DT-3 Tuner plugged in)
Analogman TS-9 Silver
Paul Cochrane Timmy
Tonefactor Huckleberry
Analogman Mini Bicomp
Analogman Chorus
Line 6 DL4

Pretty sure that's everything (it's sad, but I haven't played in so long that I may have left something out). My main area of uncertainty comes from the order in which to arrange the TS-9, Timmy, Huckleberry and Bicomp - I know it's going to take some tweaking and listening, but I'm interested in some opinions from you fine people. I'm also never really sure where to put the volume pedal, though I know that at the very least, I want it before the DL-4 (so I can get my volume swells to delay).

FWIW, I play an '81 Ibanez AS-200 (or a '94 American 40th Anniversary Strat) into this stuff, into a Peavey Classic 30 (I suppose the next upgrade is the amp, but not any time soon).

I changed that for you. The DL4 has a volume swell delay in it, use that, it's not too shabby. You want your volume pedal at the end so that you can control your overall volume, rather than the signal from guitar to effects. You want that to be a strong signal. Also, put your chorus up front, before OD...

One more thing... Sell me your AS200. (0) I'm dying to find one... I'm torn right now between that and an AM 205, but I think I want the bigger body, but I'm not 100%....

Interesting - I'm hopeful to have some time to experiment with the order this weekend and will let you know the results. I hear you re the volume at the end, but that's interesting about putting the Chorus up front - I was under the impression that most folks put their Chorus towards the end of their chain.

As for the AS-200, I'm madly in love with it and just can't. I'm sorry. I'm GASing like crazy right now - tempted to pick up rolly's Soapbar II (never played anything with P90s), but given purchase of the pedal board and the soon-to-be purchased George Ls and pedalboard case (plus the FX I've picked up lately), I'm thinking I'd better cool off...oh yeah, I just purchased a home too

Played around this weekend with the ODs, distortion and compressor...found the following to work best:

TS-9 -> Timmy -> Huckleberry -> Mini Bicomp

I need to play with the attack on the Bicomp, but I found it best to put that at the end - it evens out the Timmy and TS-9 when I use them separately, as well as when I use them together (that's really a killer combo too, BTW - those 2 ODs and the compressor).

I toyed around with putting the comp before the distortion, and vice versa, and I found that in the end, it made sense to put the comp after the distortion...also helps kind of smooth/even it out. In any event, they're all true bypass, so I can essentially take the comp out of the equation if I want to (but as of now, once I dial things in a bit more, I have a feeling I'll be keeping it on most of the time...also love the versatility of the bicomp - Ross is great for some stuff, but I do enjoy the Orange Squeezer too).

Definitely -- I don't like having a comp before an OD. You sacrifice nuance and dynamics. I could see it being useful for someone wanting to squeeze every last bit of distortion out of an OD pedal chain, though. (I run Sparkle Drive -> Barber LTD -> BiComp. My 95% setting is LTD -> Orange Squeezer. I really only use the Ross side to cop a Trey tone or for country-style chicken pickin.)

As for the fuzz: I would highly recommend putting it before your ODs. Actually, it should be the first thing your guitar sees (b/c of the impedance matching that most fuzz transistors need).
