    Slavephan Selects

Been a few months since I last posted in here - Was listening to this lxl the other day because I hadn't in years (honestly maybe 10+) https://phish.in/1997-12-11/limb-by-limb As one of my favorite songs, I love most versions of Limb by Limb. But this version is just spectacular. And a SBD with perfect Trey tone? Yeah, it's worth a re-listen!

    All Things Mike Gordon

Per Matt Laurence.... Mike Gordon Jan 1993 Interview Errata In Early 1993 I interviewed Mike Gordon in my parents' house in Lexington, MA for his first article in Bass Player magazine. While I can't find the other tape, this one is a herky-jerky discussion of his practice techniques and equipment, with a fairly embarrassing bass-on-bass jam in the middle in which I am severely outclassed (surprise... plus this was 25 years ago, I've gotten better). It's just fun to hear him talk and play so casually in such a low-key context, with some basic wisdom on practicing that still holds solid.

    Couch Tour

Nice. Would def. like to check out Willie and Neal at least. Willie's new album of Frank Sinatra covers is surprisingly decent.

    Huge General Phish Thread

I think there's truth to all of this. Mexico is prohibitively expensive for most fans (and more power to those who can swing it). And after thousands of people invested so much time and money into Curveball only to get burned by the cancelation may still be licking their wounds. Most people are probably very hesitant to throw down another several thousand dollars into a Phish getaway. Plus, NYE looms. Another four-show run that requires a lot of travel for people, lodging, and all the other usual expenses. If you're not from the northeast, then YEMSG probably takes up to $1000 for four shows plus whatever vacation/travel time. \\ On top of that, the previous Mexico shows haven't been stellar in terms of musical quality. When it comes to talking about the sets or certain performances, Rivera Maya doesn't jump to the head of the conversation with anyone I talk to. What I gather from people who have gone (and I haven't, so I'm on the outside looking in), people talk about the experience. The love of waking up at a sunny resort, having cocktails and frozen drinks during the day, lounging by the pool, and seeing Phish at night while dancing on the beach with friends in a small crowd. It sounds truly lovely. It's the unique experience that's being sold. It's exclusive by nature. The fact that it's not popular this year is a confluence of bad luck and bad timing. Still, I would go in a heartbeat if I could swing it. See you guys at New Year's.

Hoist is up there with Billy Breathes for me. While they have other albums that might have a better colllection of songs, I feel like Hoist is a really well-played and well-produced album, and things like horns (including the Tower of Power horn section), banjo from Bela Fleck, female chorus singers, strings, Alison Kraus, and other guests on it make these songs sound different than they do live. It’s also the album that got me into Phish back in ‘94. People were calling it a sellout album and their worst album back then. Little did people know that they’d go on to release much worse albums in the future!

Exactly. It tells a story (Rift as well), which is how I like to listen to records. Lights off, no stopping till it's over. It isn't just a collection of songs like their recent "efforts".

It's definitely my favorite studio album of theirs by far, and the best-produced IMO. And probably the only phish studio album that I still like listening to straight through from start to finish. Ghost is #2 and I already have that on vinyl. I bought it years ago when it cost the same as every other regular-ass new record did.

I will say that it's the one album of theirs I'd most like to have in that format... very organic/acoustic/whatever you want to call it.

I just can't see paying $56 (after shipping) for this.

Billy Breathes re-re out on vinyl 10/26. Missed opportunity to release some more white colored vinyl, IMO. https://drygoods.phish.com/dept/billy-breathes?cp=773_103382 ETA: red would have been another cool choice. I typically spend about half this much on 2 180g... I just don't understand why they charge so much. I hate to see a wasted side as well, only 3/4 have music. Fall 96 anyone?

I think part of it is just trying to get this out of the way before NYE announcement. I'd be hesitant to go to this regardless of Curveball just based on the past two, but that cancellation certainly has to be having an impact on these tix.

    Huge General Phish Thread

Maybe some people are hesitant to to travel to an event like this this soon after Curveball. Dunno. Not sure I'd read too far into them sending a reminder email...that seems pretty common.

    Huge General Phish Thread

Yep, announcement 9/10 and then tix onsale 9/14. Followup 9/19. That's a good point though, this may be it if it doesn't sell.

They gave, what? A 4 day notice? We've been on the fence. It's a lot of money. But I can't imagine they'll do this many (if any) more times.

Now I'm-a stream it. Outside of vinyl, the last CD box set I bought was Phish At The Roxy. And I don't see myself buying anymore. I don't have a CD player anymore... I mean I could rip them into iTunes but only since my laptop is kinda old. At that point what do I do with them, coasters?

Get the killer GD Pacific Northwest one instead. That thing is beautiful.

Pretty funny that they've already had to send out a "hey guys... this is on sale btw..." email. I'm guessing it isn't selling as fast as the last two times. ETA: Yeah there are a ton of rooms left. I needed that reminder to buy the $500 BD box set though! (10)
